Bond Breaker

As we all know the Canadian government VOC Compliance laws changed with respect to most solvents in construction liquids last year. This presented a scramble to find a substitute for the old solvent based bondbreakers such as the Dayton J6 the old industry standby bond breaker.

Since tilts are a major part of our business and critical to some of our loyal customers, we had to be extra careful in our alternate supplier selection. It is fine for a manufacturer to say their product works when they are primarily selling it in California or Texas, which have totally different weather conditions – yep we have rain and more rain.

After lengthy due diligence we selected SpecChem LLC as our supplier of choice for bond breaker in this market.

Here are some steps we took and reasons for picking SpecChem:

Market Responsiveness – SpecChem was very much aware of the changing environmental conditions in Canada and responded to them with a solid product line that passed muster. Other suppliers were slow off the mark or unresponsive.

Past Experience – SpecChem owners and managers have a long history in the chemical market. They actually worked for Conspec the initial creator or formulator of J6, and later sold this company to Dayton Superior. Later they re-entered the market with a broader product line.

Product Support – SpecChem provides excellent training for dealers, general contractors and sub-contractors alike.

Testimonials – a number of U.S. dealers of SpecChem gave strong supporting testimonials with respect to their product and service levels.

Product Testing – Richform worked with a number of it’s customers to test the bond breaker on sample slabs in adverse weather conditions (cold and raining). In all cases the product met or exceeded expectations. Next we had customer try the bond breaker on one panel for testing, and once again it meet or exceeded expectations.

Post this due diligence, we launched the bond breaker in late 2011 and have great success with it. In 2012 it proved out on more than 70 tilts. Here is what our customers say about it:

  • Panels come off like butter
  • Better than J6 in my mind
  • Don’t even us wedges in the spring and summer
  • The panels are so smooth
  • The only product we will use, love this stuff
